Sonnet 116
/
Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments
Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove
Oh no, it is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken
It is the star to every wandering bark whose worth unknown, although his height be taken
Love's not Time's fool
Though rosy lips and cheeks, within his bending sickle's compass come
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks
But it bears out even until the edge of doom
If this be error and upon me proved
Then I never writ, nor no man ever loved - Sonnet 116
Sonnet 116 has always been one of my favorite poems on love. I doubt Shakespeare was writing with Biblical truths in mind, but I find them nonetheless. Here I see a picture of true love based in Christ. Such love will stay strong no matter what comes. I will not deny that I am a poetic soul, a hopeless romantic. The imagery of these beautiful lines stir up the depths of my soul. They have become etched on my heart as our love grows stronger and our marriage lengthens. We have changed, yes, but our love has not altered. It will last long after all traces of beauty have left our faces and when our bodies are weak and frail. I find it so magnificent that two flawed individuals can become so much stronger when bound together by marriage and love in Christ. Truly a cord of 3 strands is not easily broken! His love knows no bounds. He does astounding things in those who seek to love Him and love each other. Such love forgives offenses, overlooks imperfections, encourages, perseveres, gives selflessly...simply put, it lasts.
In May we will have been married for 2 years. I can't believe how much our love has grown since then. We are stronger and more united than ever before, and our love keeps growing. I eagerly await the day when we look back on our lives and see all the things Love has brought us through. Today I am thankful for a man who strives to love me as Christ loved the Church. Such love is an ever-fixed mark, that looks on tempests and is never shaken...
Happy (early) Valentines Day!
