I have always thought that Autumn is the perfect time of year for family photos, but every year I fall more and more in love with Utah in the Fall. The Wise family was such a joy to work with this year. Each family is uniquely beautiful, and I love seeing how each person and family is never replicated. Even though this is my favorite location, no shoot ever turns out the same. I loved how this family was so caring for their baby brother. The light was beautiful, but love makes the magic in photos.
This Autumn has been such a beautiful season for family photos. It was such a blessing to photograph so many sweet and beautiful families. I love to create a carefree environment so that everyone can feel free to be themselves. Every session has felt like such an adventure. We explored together, finding the beautiful light and locations. We played, laughed, and traipsed about the mountains. It truly comes across when families stop thinking about the camera so much, and just start having fun together, like in this session with the Ramsey Family in Big Springs Park, UT. The “perfect photo” is an elusive goal. Instead, its so much more beautiful to let go, love your people and have a blast together. Let yourself feel all of those feelings of gratefulness in the moment, and it will come back to you time and time again in your images you’ll keep for a lifetime. Who knows, maybe even your grandchildren down the road will look at these and think, “They must have really loved each other.” I sure hope my grandchildren can see that we had so much fun together. As it turns out, letting go of the “perfect photo” is the best scenario for making the most cherished images.
Have you ever wondered what time of year is best for family photos in Utah? I must say it has to be Autumn, hands down. Imagine your precious little ones running through the crunchy colorful leave, a crisp, cool breeze blowing through your hair, the cozy feeling that the warm sunset brings, and the dappled light coming through the colorful trees dancing all around you. It’s a pure, unfiltered beauty surrounding your and your family. Everyone pulls in close to enjoy it together. As you all enjoy the stunning vistas, you also have those beautiful moments frozen in time forever. Autumn is truly the perfect season to have family portraits taken.
The seasons are changing here in Utah. Winter has slowly released it’s grip, and Spring has turned up everywhere you look. Our little neighborhood streets are lined with blooming trees, the dandelions dot the green grass with yellow balls of brightness, and the sunlight pours through our windows until almost 8 PM. It always baffles me how quickly the seasons change, and how excited I am to experience the next one. Our family is entering a new season too, and I’m excited to see it start to open us up to something new.
Only God could have known and planned our family. As I look back to my days of longing for a home full of children, I’m grateful for His timing. I don’t understand exactly why children come when they do. Some are surprises, and some wait with longing for years and years. Some go through loss after loss. It doesn’t make sense to me, but it does make me grateful. I look at them, fully aware they are a gift and a reward I don’t deserve and did nothing to earn. I think scripture puts it perfectly:
A few weeks ago I had the incredible privilege of taking Alexandra's senior portraits in the old city of St. Augustine. It's no secret that I've stepped back quite a bit from work. I didn't think I would ever love any work like I loved weddings. Spoiler: I was wrong. I have found a new fire for what is right in front of me. Alex and her family are so dear to our hearts, and it was an absolute honor to memorialize this season of stepping out onto her own path forward. Alex is an artist herself, so this old, beautiful, colorful city felt perfectly fitting for her.
I cannot believe it has been almost six months since our second little girl was born! I am so excited to share a few images from her nursery, sources and some shots of her in that sweet, tiny newborn glory! She was only 6 lbs 6 oz, so our Genevieve was a small one. I'm so thankful for this calm, peaceful space in our home and wanted to share how we pulled it together without costing too much. There is something so beautiful about preparing room in your heart and home for new life. The nursery has always been so much more than a pretty room to me; it's a place where I express how deeply grateful I am for the gift of life and the unique way I see it forming.
Half a year. It's such a memorable time as a new family. Half a year together as three, instead of two. Babies sweet personalities come out and they become more independent. It's truly a precious season. It was a joy to capture this milestone for Michelle, Paul & Judah a few weeks ago. There is something incredible about documenting the journey two people as they wed, to when they grow a family. Few things give me more joy creatively. I see them change and become different, better, more who God created them to be as they immerse themselves in laying down their lives for each other. It's truly beautiful.
These two! I don't have many words, only because this incredibly couple is close to my heart. Bringing Lauren & Andrew's vision for their engagement session to life in Pensecola was an immense joy. I love when people want something that is entirely unique to who they are. I find it so invigorating to be challenged to create something that is both beautiful and authentic. There are a millions upon millions of beautiful images out there, but true representations of personhood, what it means to be human and in love? I'm not so sure there are as many; and that is precisely what I endeavor to represent with my art. Perfection is boring. Real is beautiful. I hope you can taste how real these two are, and just how much depth there is to their hearts and story.
It's hard to imagine a setting more perfect for this sweet, relaxed couple. We spent the final hour on the coast enjoying the warm light and beautiful views of Rosemary Beach. Dawn was an expert planner and somehow managed to compliment their surroundings perfectly with their breezy looks. These two are so natural together, like the ocean waves and the soft sand. I am looking forward to their 30a seaside wedding late this Summer!
One of the major perks of my job is having the honor of photographing my family's special moments. My sweet cousin Haley and I have always been very close, so it is such a privilege to document this season as she enters into marriage with her soon-to-be husband Josh. I love that they chose to do the session on Josh's family land. It makes it all the sweeter to know these memories have roots, like the beautiful fall trees, deeper than mere pretty.
These two are so dear to my heart. It's truly an honor to photograph people with a desire for simplicity, real moments and beauty without frill. Of course Rosemary Beach at sunset will always be my favorite as well. All the whites, creams, subtle blues and greenery is salve for the seaside-lovers soul.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Ashley for over six years now. One of the wonderful aspects of social media (back then, blogging) is the opportunity to meet kindred spirits. She is one of the rare, beautiful souls I have had the pleasure of getting to know in real life as well. When she contacted me about doing a session in their home, I was thrilled. They have such a sweet, tender love and knowing their hearts makes it even more special for me. Unbeknownst to me, Ashley & Louis had just found out they were expecting a baby that very morning! When she told me a week later, I almost cried. I love the challenge of infusing meaning and depth in everything I create, but this session goes beyond what I could have devised - it feels like providence to me. I'm so thankful for these two, and for Ashley's sweet friendship over the years.
Ever since I had our daughter almost 2 years ago now, my heart has had a huge shift in the moments I feel are most important. I love to get dressed up and have a stunning outdoor backdrop for our family memories, and I will always adore those moments. However, I'm finding the ones I cherish the most are the everyday memories of our life together. It was such a pleasure to be invited into the Davidsons' home to capture the little moments of this season of life with their sweet Ansley. It is so sweet to encapsulate a bit of this season for their family in the real moments they share in their beautiful home. I am so passionate about doing this kind of imagery - it's a different kind of ethereal and I cannot get enough! I'm excited to be taking on more of this work in the future. It really doesn't get more precious than this!

Art has many forms, and one of the most lovely is floral artistry. Flowers are such beautiful, delicate things that only last for such a short while. They require great care and patience. My sweet friend Shannon from Fleur & Lumière is one of the most naturally talented floral designers I've met. She has a gift for seeing beauty and creating it from a messy array of options. A few weeks ago we met up, she creating as she does so effortlessly, and I merely watched, mesmerized by the process. There is something so incredibly romantic about doing an engagement session the day before your wedding. I'm so glad I was able to sneak away to Alys Beach with Alex and Matt for a few moments before their rehearsal dinner. The days before a destination wedding is so full with friends and family coming in to celebrate, so it's nice to get away for some moments alone in the midst of festivities. It's easy to see the eager anticipation these two share about tying the knot! Thank you for allowing me to capture your love, you two!
It's hard to believe I'm actually sharing these images from Michelle and Paul's engagement from last month. We've dreamed of this day for so long and I honestly can't believe it's here. It is such an honor to document timeless memories for my sweet couples, but having the chance to do the same thing for family is almost too much for my heart! Sisters have one of the most special bonds I believe two people can have. She is truly one of my best friends. Thank you both for trusting me with your day. I love you two!
It is such an honor to have this shoot on Style Me Pretty's front page today. It has been a dream of mine for quite some time now. Mozart once said, "Music is not the notes, but the silence between." In a way, images are the silence between moments as well. Throughout this whole editorial, I sought to encapsulate that idea, the beautiful dichotomy between movement and stillness. Colorado seemed a natural and ideal location. Nature itself is a perfect contrast between grandeur and simplicity. It is the the ultimate in-between. It is not too much of one or the other. These ideas were the basis for this shoot. The objective was to create grandness in the simplest way possible, and to express the mystery of "the silence between" in a pensive manner.
None of these images can really do justice to the grandeur found in these mountains. I had no idea how much we'd need this trip and the refreshment it brought us. We didn't rest much during our stay, but how could we waste time with such views to see? We drove through Rocky Mountain National park 3 different times and never tired of taking in it's beauty. Here are a few personal images I took in between our shoots.
I love the romance of Summer. The warm sun and late evenings by the sea entice me. My childhood Summers were spent barefoot, dreaming under the canopy of oaks. The grand landscapes of Jekyll Island feel similar to those memories. It feels like home. It is such a perfectly romantic place to make memories, albeit I'm biased. These two have had such a beautiful, whirlwind romance. McKay flew to a different state to take Allison on a date and it was history from there. A few months ago he proposed on Valentines Day. They are the perfect romantics getting married in such a perfectly romantic place.
This incredible session is so dear to my heart. This is representative of everything I hope to give my clients. It is no secret that I love details, but the why behind them is what I love more. Working with Brooke to create meaningful family heirlooms was a beautiful process. This was her heart behind the details: "Large leafy trees, because of their deep roots and large winding branches. They have great meaning to me because they symbolize be deeply rooted in Christ. Planted of the Lord. Streams, because they are joyful, peaceful and refreshing.
Last month my husband and I celebrated 5 years of marriage. Half a decade seems like such a milestone. We are not the same people we were when we married each other. I wanted something to remind me daily of the vow I made to Jonathan before God, now that we are such different people. No matter how we grow, not matter how we change, I will always take these words seriously. The talented Jenny Sanders of Graceline Art created this gorgeous script of our vows to hang in our home. I love having things of meaning around our home, and not just pretty items. This is currently on our mantle and I know it will be a cherished piece for years to come.
These two! Goodness. The elegance of Wormsloe Plantation has nothing on their love. Photographing them made my soul come alive. Days like this one make me feel so thankful that I have been entrusted with the gift of creating these memories for legacies to come. They will last long after I'm gone. I look forward to being with Hannah & Aaron as they wed in Atlanta very soon!
There is something extra special about photographing twins. It brings back all the memories of when our twin boys were so tiny. It's a unique and incredible journey to have have multiples. The Bunnell family welcomed the most precious twin baby girls into their family recently. It was such an honor to photograph this precious family and document the arrival of their twin daughters. They were such a dream to photograph. It’s so sweet that twins are so comforted by the nearness of each other. Being a twin mom is pretty incredible.
